Hi,

Of course, it's up to you, PC-BSD team, to name your first server, but from linguistic point of view and from IT perspective it is the silliest name you'd have come out with. Why?

TrueCAR - Mitsubishi, Mercedes, Ford are TrueCARs.

Suggesting "the True" operating system on the market full of excellent OSes is an unnecessary hype, not to mentioning that TrueOS and PC-BSD are at odds with each other - two "operating system" names for the same operating system will be misleading.

It is sad you've made the same wrong/incoherent decision as with the naming of PC-BSD Desktop edition(s) which will make "ordered" naming for future editions merely impossible.

Regards

Congratulations to the winner. It's a good thing all those abbreviations are in there because "Personal Computer Berkley Software Distribution Server Edition True Operating System" doesn't exactly roll off the tongue.

Not really a fan of TrueOS as a name, but it doesn't matter much to me. I'm quite ok with PC-BSD for the desktop OS; the server OS... well I already use FreeBSD for that.

As I have no terrific thoughts for an alternative, and missed the "contest" period, I've no right to complain anyway. Chances are I'd have voted for PC-BSD Server Edition or something like that, no less of a mouthful than Linux Mint Debian Edition, really.

Yay TrueOS, go TrueOS go!

Seriously!

While I'm fine with the developers and the community decision, I have to say this is not the best name for me (but I cannot come up with a great one). We are going to have
  • PCBSD Isotope
  • PCBSD TrueOS

The first problem I see is that the two names are totally unrelated and, what is more important, the true of the server edition makes the standard edition sounds like fake. Moreover, the TrueOS name does not leave much space for themeing and stuff like that (see for example here), and is not a name that is going to be changed in the long term, at least this is my opinion. On the contrary, Isotope does.

Anyway, the code is much more important that the name, because on the name we can discuss forever, but on the code we have all to agree!
