Default Error - Installing PC-BSD on Dell XPS 15
Hello all!

I downloaded PC-BSD 9 and I'm trying to install on my notebook Dell XPS L502X. The system seems to load properly, but when he tries to setting up the graphical installer, simply restart the machine. I checked that happens a mistake with the video driver, but the error shows fast and I'm not sure.

What can I do to fix it?

I've just had the same problem. So after a few reboots, I chose the VESA option. I went a (very) little further but I couldn't launch the installer. I ended up giving up. This is the third day I have spent trying to install other OSes alongside Windows 7, moving-robocopying-backing up-reencrypting whole partitions, burning ISOs to either the rewritable CD or DVD, to no avail.

I have installed Debian 6 twice, Kubuntu 11.10 twice, Kubuntu 10.10 once and now PCBSD 9, all in 64-bit editions. Not once of these trials led to a functional system. Even worse, aside from the useless Debian that can't even negotiate a dynamic IP over the Ethernet NIC, all other installs either crashed in the middle (Go, Kubuntu!) or didn't start.

Also using a Dell XPS, but an L702X. Kubuntu also crashed on a Fujitsu Siemens AmiloXi2528 so the hypothesis that Dell did something to prevent other OSes from being installed is kinda tinfoil hat conspiracy theory.

PCBSD also chokes on graphics. The X config seems to be the culprit but really, the idea of delving into that and reading tons of documentation just cuts my wings.

Isn't there a really basic but standard graphic mode that can be activated on all systems or is the idea of a universal graphic mode just that, idealism? I'm wondering why the installer couldn't fall back to that mode.

It's a real shame. Last year, I couldn't install because the partition size I had available was smaller than the 12 or 14 Gigs that were needed. Now, the installer just won't/can't start.

Does this use Intel video? If so in the next few days we will be
releasing 9.1-BETA1, which includes updated Intel drivers, you may want
to test that

Recently I've been checking out the installation of various Linux distributions, FreeBSD 9, and PC-BSD, on a new high-end desktop and a relatively new Sandy Bridge based Thinkpad.

All installed cleanly on the laptop. On the desktop, Linux had the best overall success but only when I pulled my Nvidia GTX-570 card out and used the onboard Intel HD 3000 graphics to get past the install so I could then add the Nvidia (not noveau) driver.

With FreeBSD I was able to complete the install, use the default VGA graphics, get the Nvidia driver, and go - no need to disable the Nvidia card during install. Nice. Sometimes a text mode installer is a plus.

I can't honestly remember how the PC-BSD install went with respect to the graphics card. When 9.1 beta is out I think I'll install it to a new drive on that system and see how it goes.

For me Ubuntu or Mint have been more successful installations "out of the box" in that either properly supported ACPI / suspend + resume. But I prefer to run BSD. Maybe one day it'll catch up in this area.

I am using a Dell XPS L501X and did not have any issues with the install except for bluetooth not working, which kind of killed it for me since I have a bluetooth mouse I use all the time, but that doesn't mean I have given up on PCBSD it's an awesome OS and am actually moving my server to a PCBSD/FreeBSD setup.

If you could list the system specs that would get you more help to resolve this issue, I sounds more like a graphics card issue to me, my system has the NVIDIA chipset which worked just fine.
