Default Live USB Read Only
Hi,

I've installed Live USB amd64 PC/BSD system. Without any hassle.

I tried to download new apps via Control Panel -> System Manager -> System Packages (AppCafe spits out with SegFault msgs - see other thread of mine). I've selected IceWM and a few packages. All started well, but ended with log entries saying
Code:
The meta-pkg manager returned an error. For more details please look at the log file: /tmp/.pc-metapkgmanager.log
I did as I was told and here it is what I saw among others:
Code:
Installing package: fonts-indic-2.1.5_1
pkg_add: fatal error during execution: getcwd
cp: /usr/local/share/desktop-directories/pcbsd-development-translation.directory: Read-only file system
Why the "read-only" system? Using USB drive I should be able to download and installed new apps to memory disk which was created during installation process.

Is that behavior OK or did I anything overlook to read ("hurry Harry" type )

Regards

Default Live USB Read Only
Are you sure you are booted off the installed system and not the USB
stick again? Normally /usr isn't read-only, unless you are booted from
LIVE media.

Can you paste the output of "mount"?

Hi,
Perhaps I expressed myself a bit awkwardly. I had run the system from Live USB, I did not installed it. As I recall the image was copied to "memory disk" before running. That's why I expected to be able to install additional apps. Live USB are not able to augment its size. You should have the USB drive preprocessed with additional partition to have more space for new software.

BTW. I tried to make use of all File Managers provided in the PC-BSD version to have a look into my ext4 file system partitions. To no avail.

I'm writing this from Debian so if you think of any other additional output which might help drop me a line and I'll switch my system to Live USB once more.

TIA
Regards

One more question.

If you think it'd be of some help to run all other desktop (KDE, XFCE,GNOME) I may do it. Tell me only what "levers to touch" during the process to get helpful output.

Default Live USB Read Only
Well, the problem in this case is that the Live Media does *not* support
installing additional software / packages. The /usr partition is mounted
read-only for a reason. If you want to begin using the software as a
typical desktop, you will need to install it to disk somewhere

Hi,

From what you said it is obvious that I am not able to test PC-BSD my way if any. I do not want to gawk or to look at PC-BSD icons and other graphical unnecessary "goodies". I want to get rid of them. But I am not allowed to do that with your PC-BSD Live USB.

I do not understand why you didn't create Live USB with e.g. 500 MB additional space for new software?

At present I am not even able to *remove* provided software to check if "new" PC-BSD will fit my expectations as AppCafe cannot download repo data to work with (see my thread http://forums.pcbsd.org/showthread.php?t=17318).

And AppCafe is being advertized as one of your "wunderwaffe". How am I to test it?

Regards

Default Live USB Read Only
This is a known short-coming of the LIVE media, since they are read-only
at the moment. I'm putting it on my TODO to make this work on USB media
in RW mode though

Just a quick note that as of 9.1-RC2, the USB-live image is read/write.
