i think I know what the problem is now - I set the BIOS to boot from the HDD but reading around if it's a SATA drive then it's a SCSI disk. My BIOS talks about bootable add-in cards so I'll have to find out what that is all about bit I seem to be getting somewhere. Did a FReeBSD 9 install specifying MBR partitions and that didn't do the trick either.
