I was trying to install Libreoffice from source and it failed with this message

it seems that the error is inside 'unotools', please re-run build
inside this module to isolate the error and/or test your fix:

Naturally, being the gullible fool I am I navigated to the appropriate directory and tried to run build (yes I did make sure build was installed first) and got

Error expanding embedded variable.

Any idea what's going on?
