Default sound install failure | creative soundblaster
PCBSD 1.5 installed very nicely, and is working great except for sound. when it boots I get popup

sound server informational message:
error while initial the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (no such file or directory)
the sound server will continue, using the null output device.

and there's no sound. it's a soundblaster 24-bit plugged into an asus motherboard. if you need more specifics, I'll see what I can hunt up. fwiw, sound is ok when this hardware boots pclinuxOS 2007. but aside from the sound error, pcbsd is looking very good.

Try editing /boot/loader.conf as root and adding this line:

Code:
snd_emu10k1_load="YES"
and reboot: if it doesn't work, remove it.

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=11140&hilit=audigy+emu10kx

might have some helpful information, in the end the audigy 2 card was working at least. The chipsets are related afaik in the emu10k* family.

http://people.freebsd.org/~ariff/lowlatency/

Read the README and just copy the files. The author is the developer of the FreeBSD sound driver in 6 and 7. Don't use the obsolete emu10kx driver in ports - it _is_ not supported, has some quirks and isn't maintained anymore since years!

Starting the driver afterwards it's as easy as entering kldload snd_emu10kx as root or make it permanent and add snd_emu10kx_load="YES" in /boot/loader.conf

But there are some Soundblaster cards which are different from emu10kx chip design. Another possibility is to use OSS from ports. Install it from /usr/ports/audio/oss, start it with soundon (as root) or make it permanent and add oss_enable="YES" in /etc/rc.conf

Try kldload snd_driver. This will auto detect your sound card and install a driver. Then to see what driver it installed do cat /dev/sndstat. Then add the driver to the loader.conf file at /boot. Should look like this kldload snd_the driver from /dev/sndstat_load="YES". Example: kldload snd_emu10k1_load="YES" if emu1ok1 is the driver loaded in /dev/sndstat.

It's also known as AudigyLS and this soundcard device isn't supported in FreeBSD. Try /usr/ports/audio/oss.

http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?quer ... ormat=html

This is emu10kx for FreeBSD 7.0, it's latest version and the successor to the obsolete version in ports.

Creative Sound Blaster Live! 24-Bit, identified by FreeBSD as "emu10k1x Soundblaster Live! 5.1".
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy LS / ES, identified by FreeBSD as "CA0106-DAT Audigy LS".
All other Creative sound cards with -DAT chipsets.
All Creative X-Fi series sound cards.

Thanks for the various replies. I'm playing "catchup" as my hacking skills are intermediate at best, and I'm rusty.

Yes, it's model SB0410, Sound Blaster Live! 24 bit Internal

I ran a diagnostic and it reports
snddetect_enable="YES"
mixer_enable="YES"

are you saying to get the FreeBSD 7.0 file and see if that works?

I do see oss: /usr/ports/audio/oss
but TerryP suggested that oss was already installed on pcbsd1.5

I was away for awhile, I'll hack at this tonight and some tomorrow and see what happens. the card is better than my speakers, maybe I should just get a card that's recognized...

looked & the links says to me re freebsd 7.0:
The snd_emu10kx driver does *not* support the following sound cards

+o Creative Sound Blaster Live! 24-Bit, identified by FreeBSD as "emu10k1x Soundblaster Live! 5.1".

yes, I now see that oss is already installed on pcbsd 1.5

then tried

pcbsd# soundon
pcbsd# soundon oss
kldload: can't load /usr/local/lib/oss/modules/osscore.ko: File exists
Loading the osscore module failed

and I'm rusty enough with vi, that although I could visually edit
/etc/rc.conf by adding oss_enable="YES"
when I went to save and exit, I got something like read only, use ! to override, but that only got me in downward spiral of frustration, more so, because I seemed so close.
so do I have edit the permissions for that rc.conf, even though I was su ?? that aside, based on the above soundon, I'm guessing oss would not load SB0410, or visa versa, the SB0410 is blocking system from loading oss. I just had an image_flash_by of that guy on the homepage relaxing in the park, and he does not look all that smart. <g>

I did write a howto on using vi some time ago, I've been working on a newer version in my home directory though.

As long as you're root you should be able to edit /etc/rc.conf

Code:
$ su - root
Password:
# vi /etc/rc.conf
You can also use ee instead of Vi which resembles a cross between MicroEMACS and Pico.
