You could try to install Firefox 15.0.1,1 from ports it works well and is stable,or use EasyPBI to create Firefox.pbi or use opera :D.

If You mean by using portupgrade/portmaster, yes this can be done that way, after all PC-BSD is FreeBSD +Xorg and some scripts +.PBI's.

There is no reason to remove pkg-config, this was replaced by pkgconf. You only have to replace pkg-config with pkgconf and that can be done so:

# portmaster -o devel/pkgconf devel/pkg-config
...
