It's okay, I will persist with PC-BSD and wait until they fix the font rendering issue. I still use Ubuntu, so not too worried about waiting for this to be fixed.
Re ‘Font rendering off-putting’, I had a similar problem with the Gentoo derivative Calculate Linux, but was able to fix things to an extent using the instructions in the Arch Linux wiki (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Font_Configuration). Clearly the relevant file paths will be different for FreeBSD, but I’d be happy to send you the contents of my /etc/fonts/local.conf file (the forum’s IM system’s not allowing me to send it on grounds of length).
