Anyone in here a current or ex-Windows user?

First and foremost, I'm not looking to start any flaming or OS wars. I'm just curious.

As my username suggests, I am a Windows user, but I'm just getting into PC BSD (and BSD at all) and I'm enjoying it so far! Super excited about the .pbis, I can't wait to try one and see what they're like (I haven't been able to yet as I can't connect to wireless on the PC BSD laptop and the only ethernet cable I can access is plugged into the computer I'm using to post this. Yes, said computer is running Windows.).

So, anyone in here running Windows? Or were you before you switched to PC BSD? What made you switch?

Once again, I have no intention of flaming or starting a war. I am merely a newbie coming from Windows, wondering if others have or are making the leap.

KRunner crashes

pbi installer not working

Well, i've been working here and there and now my computer works a lot better.

I wiped kde and xfce, only i have lxde.

I had installed thunar.

Now, i have this single problem: i needed to install Xfburn and appcafe failed after downloading it. I got the pbi in a cd and then i could install it using the pbi_add command wich worked nicely.

But i have no GUI installer. What should i do for fixing this?

Now looks my system works well except for this.

When attempting to run the AppCafe? application, I receive the error:

I recently moved my laptop to PCBSD. And almost everything ran as a charm - really a good job!!!

I got only some concerns with the audio. Though it works well, I wanted to be able to achieve something I managed with pulseaudio under Linux but so far I failed.

What I am trying to achieve is to be able to control several applications inputs and direct them to one or more sinks.
Basically lets say that I plug two headsets (one with jack, the other with usb) and I want to play both music and a movie and direct the movie to one headset and the music to the other one. Then music is over and I want both headsets to have the movie sound.
A typical use case is when I am in the train with children :)
I was able to manage that under Linux and wanted to reproduce it under PCBSD.
I made several tries including a kernel rebuild to disable sound and take advantage of OSS4 but it was not a real success (sound was not ideal and there was certainly a conflict with automatic load of snd_uaudio that crashed my computer).
I have been googling but without success :(

If anyone has any suggestion how to solve my use case, I would be happy to try. I am not asking for a pulseaudio based solution therefore if you have any alternative I would be also happy.

If you need detail on my hardware let me know.

Port or PBI request: fpm2

I've recently started using BSD -- as a long-time Linux user, I have used Figaro's Password Manager (FPM) to store my passwords. While there is a port of FPM in the ports collection, it has some issues:

There are actually two separate versions of FPM; the original, which is found in the ports collection, and FPM2, which is not. While these programs share the same name and function, they differ markedly in operation.

The version of FPM in the ports collection is 0.60

The version of FPM2 commonly used in the Linux world is 0.79.

The later version (FPM2, 0.79) uses the AES-256 cipher to encrypt the password database, while the earlier version in the ports collection (FPM, 0.60) uses blowfish. Having installed FPM from the ports collection, I cannot read my password files, as the encryption algorithms are incompatible.

When I downloaded and tried to compile the FPM2 0.79 source code, I got a cipher algorithm-related error message.

So, could someone please either update the ports collection to include FPM2, or otherwise generate an PBI install?

Bonsoir � tous,

Apr�s de nombreux mois d'absence li�s aux diff�rentes tentatives avort�es d'installation de PCBSD � l'�poque, je d�cide aujourd'hui de retenter l'aventure.

Et re-belote, c'est toujours pareil : pas moyen d'avoir un PCBSD op�rationnel.

Je m'explique : je t�l�charge la derni�re ISO, je la v�rifie (MD5sum) et je la grave. R�sultat, installation sans probl�me et...arr�t au reboot, c.�.d. ici :

F1 FreeBSD
F6 PXE
Boot: F1

Bien s�r, j'ai fait de nombreuses tentatives, t�l�charg� plusieurs fois, grav� sur diff�rents graveurs et diff�rents supports (DVD-R, DVD+RW, cl� USB) et j'ai toujours le m�me souci.

Sauf que...PCBSD fonctionne parfaitement sous Virtualbox d'o� je vous �cris actuellement.

Quelqu'un peut m'expliquer ?

Ubuntu One port

Having used U1 for some time to sync (and backup my user-files) between laptops, linux-distros, phones etc. I'd really like to see a port to PC-BSD, having just started using it.

From googling "BSD ubuntu one" I can gather that there have been attempts in the past, but the most recent I find is more than a year old - just wondering if the attempt have been abandoned or if it's still a work in progress.

Xfce broken

i had switch from kde4 to xfce.

I've been using lxde but it has bugs still.

Xfce worked well, but since yesterday, i don't remember what i did,
but most apps had lost the window border, then i can't move them
or close them.

I had reinstall kde 4 but i wish to remove it.

Another problem is that i want to edit the xfce start menu and i can but changed doesn't take effect.

How can i tune my pcbsd for working with xfce and make it forget about lxde and kde4?

endless loop after post-install finishes

Hi all,

after Installation (without probs) PC-BSD boots ok. After the first-boot questions (language, timezone, root-PW, user), when I click "finished" the system automatically reboots and sends me again to these questions. Tried booting without acpi to no avail.

System:
asus p8 h67 m mobo
intel i5-2400
intel graphics 810

me: Linux-user - new to BSD!

You're probably shaking your head already, at the title alone! :p

I have used windooze all my life. My CLI experience is limited to..'format C:' :D

I have a fair bit of hardware knowledge & have a growing file server, thus a growing problem - data integrity. Enter ZFS. I have been reading how great ZFS is in regards to maintaining data integrity & have come to the conclusion that it is something I oh so badly want... without the CLI! :D I have installed PCBSD on a spare rig & as a VM - on the spare rig with KDE & as a VM with Gnome. This is to test how 'viable' PCBSD etc is for me.

I'm trying to find where/how to add HDDs & make them into vdevs/zpools etc, but have had no luck! :( I'm hoping its GUI, just like the install! I have 5 HDDs - the OS HDD & 4 others, that are all the same - these are the ones I'm trying to 'see' in PCBSD & configure as a vdev/zpool.

How do I go about doing this?

User Manager deletes home dir even when you tell it not to

When removing a user foo, User Manager asks: Delete home directory for foo (/usr/home/foo)?
If you click "NO" and apply it goes ahead and deletes the directory and all its files ANYWAY.

I couldn't believe it could be this sloppy, so I tested it twice after it happened to make sure I wasn't fumbling the mouse somehow. This is on 9.1.

Wireless, Device Unknown

I have a BCM4311. LED indicates it is on but it does not see any networks. The Boot/loader.conf does not have any reference to the wireless device. Rc.conf has the following lines:

wlans_bwn0="wlan0"

ifconfig_wlan1="wpa syncdhcp"

ipod touch not found

Hi,
I'm running 9.1-amd64 and I'm trying to get my (old) ipod touch 2nd generation recognized.
In dmesg it just shows :
ugen2.4: at usbus2
and in usbconfig the same :
ugen2.4: at usbus2, cfg=0 md=HOST spd=HIGH (480Mbps) pwr=ON
Nothing else...
It doens't show up in the tray application with the attached devices.
I installed gtkpod but even there nothing happens.
How do I get to see my ipod ? Any tips and hints are welcome !
