Hi guys,

I've just installed PC-BSD for the very first time, previously I've been running a plethora of operating systems, Ubuntu Linux and Windows XP on my desktop and always Windows Vista on my laptop. Now I've decided the laptop deserves a better OS, so I've installed PC-BSD...everything went forward without a hitch except for one thing: the wireless network card in my Lenovo 3000 N100 (Intel ipw3945 ABG wifi says wiki) isn't being detected. The wired is, and works fine (using it now, sitting next to router), but the wireless doesn't even show up.

I've searched the knowledgebase and can't find a fix - can anyone shed some light on this situation? Please don't tell me I'm going to have to go back to Vista...

Thanks!

There is an ipw driver but the manual says it s for the Intel PRO/Wireless 2100 :-(

You might try ndisgen, there's a good guide in the guides forum.

Unless any one else as worked with the Intel 3945, can't suggest much else other then searching the forums for other topics about the card.

Alright thanks for the help, I found another related topic, but it doesn't really offer information or have anyone saying that they got it working in a certain way:

viewtopic.php?f=27&t=9763&hilit=intel+3945 (http://forums.pcbsd.org/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=9763&hilit=intel+3945)

Note: I'm also a total n00b when it comes to *nix OS's, so I might not catch on right away with the jargon, etc.

Hi, I think this could help you http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO885 ... eless.html (http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/network-wireless.html). If you're lucky and your chipset is supported (natively or by ndisgen) this guide is what you were searching for. You have to read carefully and follow the steps like you were reading the holy bible :-D.

Bye, Daniele!

ipw3945 is not supported by FreeBSD 6.x, which is what the current PC-BSD version uses.
When PC-BSD is based on FreeBSD 7, or the driver gets backported to FreeBSD 6, then you will be able to use the internal wireless. Until then, you will have to get a compatible wireless adapter or be restricted to a wired connection.

Thanks DragnLord! What kind of timeframe are we looking at for the change for PC-BSD? I think if I have to run Vista for any longer I will start melting chips.

A version of PC-BSD based on FreeBSD 7.0-Release is currently in Alpha testing.

I was actually expecting the release or at least a beta to be made by now but I'm sure the Dev's have a reason why we're not all using PC-BSD7 yet ;-).

Rock solid work over quick and dirty hehe.

The Alpha is actually pretty solid here other than not being get much in the way of extra programs working. If they were MS the Alpha would probably be labeled RC1. :-)

You know, the delay in PC-BSD7 is a good excuse for me to write the article I've always wanted to write.

How to playfully turn a FreeBSD install into a PC-BSD for fun lol

The current set of alphas were more testing how the FreeBSD 7 base worked out under our various tools so we could work out any kinks more easily. Expect a while before you see an actual release of PCBSD7, there are some features we want in the next version that haven't even been started yet!

I expect you'll see a release around September :)

September, sounds good! Until then, I suffer, but at least I know that relief is on it's way.

I'm sure it will be well worth the wait :-)

(As long as it ships with KDE3 hehe)

(As long as it ships with KDE3 hehe)

That's the plan at the moment, given the current standard of KDE4 and the status of the KDE4 port.

It'll get there in time though, and we'll include it when we think it's ready :)

Just wondering if there's any news on the newest PC-BSD version?
