Hi all,

I installed pcbsd 1.4 beta a couple of weeks back. I have an asrock board (k8NFG6) with an nvidia 6100 chipset (nf-6100-405 to be precise).

Just after installation i was prompted for my resolution and i picked one of the nvidia drivers at random and it worked first time, and so did beryl... Wow (you dont get that with ubuntu!!).

Anyway, i decided to have a fresh install of the new RC1, i went for the same settings, did it work this time round... Nope, my system just restarts itself and goes back to 1024x768.

What's that all about??

:?

Maybe you should write a letter to the testing mailing list!

Well i really don't think that would be much use.

However what i was really looking for was some sort of constructive reply as to why i am having difficulties with the new release candidate when i am using the same setup i used on the beta release, and with no problems.

Maxwas,

The best thing is to email the Snapshot/Beta mailinglist (testing@lists.pcbsd.org) and Kris or Tim will try to help you and sort our your problem.
Please provide as many details as you can.
Cheers,
Gerard

Just wanted to add that I have had the same problem with RC1 as Maxwas. So this is a problem with the graphical configuration system. And not something maxwas is doing wrong.

The graphical configuration program to set up graphic driver and resolution simply doesn't work at it's current state. (It still doesn't work in the latest snapshot that I downloaded from dev.pcbsd.org.) Very dissapointing, since it worked nice in the alfa releases..

Hi eh22,

Yes i am very disappointed also.

I reverted back to using the beta 1.4 which worked no problems using the driver nvidia-9746.

The new Da Vinci came out today and i thought great, this has got to work, did it..? No.

I reinstalled beta 1.4 again and tried an upgrade using the new release, this did not work either, although the original xorg.conf from beta was left intact, which i tried also, to no avail.

I also tried using the default screen with Da Vinci, downloading and installing the pbi for nvidia-9746. Didn't work either :(

Where to now?

It seems to be the splash screen that is causing the problem.

Check this post...

http://forums.pcbsd.org/viewtopic.php?t=5058

I removed the entry for the splash screen in the kernel config file and recompiled (took about 20 mins) - as a last resort.

The previous driver installation had wrecked X, so i had to run xorgconfig and create a new config so i could get back to the desktop.

I then ran the resolution wizard again and chose the 7xxx driver.

System is now fine, compiz has never worked (and looked) so good
