I installed PC-BSD just yesterday, the installation went fine, I rebooted, everything was going as it should and then instead of X I got a blank screen.
I did a little googleing (checked here too) and stumbled upon https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... +bug/22985 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/22985)
There appears to be a bug in xorg ati driver. So I just added the following line to the Screens section of xorg.conf :

Option "MonitorLayout" "LVDS,CRT"

And the picture was there. Hope this helps someone.

P.S, Is Beryl supposed to work on ATI cards? As I remember from some time back when installing it on Ubuntu Beryl (1.4) could only be run with XGL server on ATI hardware. Right now if I choose Beryl as window manager it tries to start and then just fallbacks to KWin
