The PBI Directory is functional, we only have to populate the DB now

Yep,
I'll be switching the official package page over to pbidir.com here shortly, once I get closer to releasing 0.8, and get some more PBI's made up :)

I just downloaded PC-BSD 0.7.8 from the BitTorrent network, but I think I'll wait for 0.8 to be released (this is to install on my computer at home). :)

I just noticed that the old PBI directory is gone (which had programs like GAIM, Linux Compat, K3b, and others that the new PBIdir doesn't have).
When is the new one going to be updated with all the software the old one had?

I noticed the http://www.pbidir.com/ site now has the nVidia Driver 1.0-7667 on it. This is cool, but one of the "this is going to swamp me forever" things about this driver is that nVidia has dropped support support for quite a few chipsets from it. Some of these chipsets will be still quite common (particularly the GeForce2 based cards).
I'd sugest adding nVidiaDriver-1.0-7174-Blevo-0.2-PV01.pbi from http://toxiccuttlefish.blevo.com as well to keep support happening for these chipsets that are NOT supported in the 7667 release:
Below are the "legacy" GPUs that are no longer supported in the unified
driver. These GPUs will continue to be maintained through special legacy
NVIDIA GPU driver releases.
NVIDIA CHIP NAME DEVICE PCI ID
RIVA TNT 0x0020
RIVA TNT2/TNT2 Pro 0x0028
RIVA TNT2 Ultra 0x0029
Vanta/Vanta LT 0x002C
RIVA TNT2 Model 64/Model 64 Pro 0x002D
Aladdin TNT2 0x00A0
GeForce 256 0x0100
GeForce DDR 0x0101
Quadro 0x0103
GeForce2 GTS/GeForce2 Pro 0x0150
GeForce2 Ti 0x0151
GeForce2 Ultra 0x0152

Wasnt there a bittorrent client that was up for download? There also seems to be other stuff that was there but is missing. I'm just wondering if it was pulled for a reason (if that even happened) or if they'll be added in later.

Hello, I liked PC-BSD and i'm using it...
But I need some packages and it disappeared from the official site...
I note that pbiDir is in "construction"...but will take a long to the packges como back??
I really want thats packages to mount a functional desktop and show to my friends that really works...because if i configure my free to my friends they will come a little crazy....lol
thanks...
(ps: sorry to my poor english... )

It's all cool that you want to show your friends, but PCBSD is not ready for prime time yet. I can do about 80% of what I like to do with it, but I had to edit my Xfree86 file, and FSTAB file to configure a few things. Plus, printing is not working on it (my printer is not recognized under FreeBSD, Lexmark 1150 scanner/printer). Chances are, they'd be discouraged from not being able to do a few things.
However, if all they do is browse the web and stuff like that, than maybe.

Functional desktop in this case is:
- Browse on internet
- Listen Music
- Burn CD's
- Make some documents, like a homework
- and play konquest...
And for me it's really do it very well at this moment...but to browse i need
a flash plugin and to listen music Xmms is perfect. Well the Xmms i installed by ports whithout problem, but the flashplugin no... :(
I know that i can do a pbi by myself or something like that...but my job is taking me a long time for now...
Oh more one thing...i have the interst to help the project with a lots of pbi's...but only in end of this year or in the begining next when my job will....relax...lol
thanks for all...
(ps: sorry mey poor english again... :P )

Olá
PC-BSD is under development indeed, and is reaching its goal little by little: Being as easy as possible for regular users. The current versions are still for power users because you'll need to configure by hand your /etc config files unfortunately.
I think we shouldn't advertise PC-BSD to regular users until we have a really easy PC-BSD for Dummies version
But we'll get there 8)

Olá Charles :D
I absolutely agree with you. With current installation and boot problems plus the lack of very important features like an internet connection gui and xf86config gui it't not a good idea for a less experienced user to use PC-BSD.
We had already some cases of people losing their data (because they didnt backup) and that is not good advertising for us.
What i belive would be benefitial for our project was trying to get people with FreeBSD desktop experience to help here.

Looks like PBIDir.com is down due to bandwidth limitations... not that anyone else probably hasn't already noticed as well.
I don't know what kind of hosting plan has been set up for the site, but I figured I'd toss out a reference and link to the host I've been using the past few months in case anything starts skyrocketing out of control bandwidth-wise as it seems to be doing lately. I've been using A Small Orange (http://www.asmallorange.com/services/) for about three months now, and been happy as a clam. They're cheap, their servers are located at The Planet (http://www.theplanet.com/index.html) down in Dallas, and their tech support is fast and solid. They also have a referral service, but I decided it'd be tacky for me to take advantage of it in this message. I'll eat the $2.50 worth of service if it means I've helped reduce PC-BSD hosting costs by introducing possibly cheaper rackspace for the project.
I just wish I wasn't near flat broke right now and could afford to actually donate money.

Hi
I also noticed that PBIdir is down...
I'm going to try and contact one of my friends who owns a hosting company (commit1) and see if he can get it hosted for free, or at a very low rate. In the mean time you can access all the PBIs at ftp://ftp.plusline.de/pub/pcbsd.
Just browse through the sub-folders

Hi guys! I'm sorry for the inconvenience
Actually when I create the package I set 500MB bandwidth/month because I had no idea how much bandwidth it would use, but then I forgot to monitor :?
Now I put a lot more as I have plenty of bandwidth available, so this shouldn't happen again
We've had more than 8,000 visits this month on the pbidir
