Hi all... I couldn't find the answer in here anywhere, but I do admit, I don't have a lot of time to search and read... bear with me.

I got PC BSD up and running, and even managed to configure the wireless card from the console. Everything worked great for about a week.

Then one day, I get this message:
login: (date, time, PCBSD) kdm[534]: X server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly
(Date, time, PCBSD) kdm[534]: Unable to fire up local display :0; disabling

Important to note that NOTHING has changed or beeen reconfigured - for a week it was nothing but a surfing machine.

I would appreciate any help

Just something to try quickly. I was once stumped with a similar error, it turned out that the EDID query on one of the monitors (it had jumped to single screen mode) had failed. Anyway, to cut a long story short I isolated the problem, the monitor jack had come away from the port slightly causing communication to the monitor to become disrupted. Plugged it back in firmly and it worked.

You'll be able to find the X error log in /var/log/Xsomething.log if I remember correctly. The answer you seek should lie within.

Thanks a bunch, Solarin. The monitor was firmly plugged in, and I've beeen going thru this Xorg.0.log, but the only thing jumping out at me is at the end of the log, it lists a bunch of supported video chipsets, followed by:

(II) Primary Device is:
(WW) NV: No matching device section for instance (BusID PCI:1:0:0) found
(EE) No Devices detected

Fatal server error:
No Screens found.

I guess the most puzzling thing is how did it work flawlessly for some time then all of the sudden forget what video chipset it's working with?

That is strange.. You can always remove the /etc/X11/XF86Config file, and at next reboot, the system will set it up again. I don't know what would have caused it to change enough to not work though :P

Ok, on my second cup of coffee, I find this in the Xorg.0.log. It also exists in Xorg.0.log.old

(!!) More than one primary device found
(--) PCI: (0:17:0) unknown vendor (0x1274) unknown chipset (0x1371) rev 8, I/O @ 0xe800/6

(--) PCI: (1:0:0) nVidia Coporation NV5 (RIVA TNT2/TNT2 pro) rev 17, Mem @ 0xd4000000/24, 0xd6000000/25

So I'm guessing the unknown device (however it happened) is causing the problem. I don't see onboard video on this board (I know its a TYAN mobo, unsure of the model), but I do know the sound has never worked - but I never looked into it. Also, the ethernet card never worked, but again, that was a non issue.

Thanks for the insight, people! :)

I tried this - and this happened:

All lines begin with:
Date/PCBSD/kdm[559]

X server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly
Display :0 cannot be opened
Unable to fire up local display at :0; disabling

Now, I'm assuming that the "unknown device" I mentioned in my last post is causing the problem. So I've modified the XF86Config file to change the "monitor0" instances to "monitor1", and I'm back to the original problem:

Date/Time/PCBSD kdm: :0[537]: IO Error in XOpenDisplay
Date/Time/PCBSD kdm[534]: Unable to fire up local display :0; disabling.

(Man, I have strange weekend hobbies!)

hello hasn't it occurred to you guys yet?
this pcbsd should never been released. kde never worked right for me right of the bat!
shame on you who pushed this crap out on the unsuspecting public. its junk, and i'll be sure to spread the word..
i've been using pc's and macs for over a decade, linux for the last 5 years. and i've seen some sorry looking/working software but this takes the cake. after i registered at this forum i took a look at the list of users, its (surprise) a really small list. as i suspect many others got taken by the hype over 'an easy to install bsd varient. what bunk.
just so you know, i more than welcome any discussions on this from anyone, email only though as i plan on uninstalling this as i have a muliple drive setup and will go back to using
ubuntu or suse pro.
the invitation stands, i'm serious, although i really don't expect to hear from anyone, but if you feel so inclined, by all means, contact me..

Case you haven't noticed...

this pcbsd should never been released.

This is beta software, (version 0.78?) it hasn't been released as on official finished product yet. Comparing it to finalized products is being "uninteligent" (couldn't find a word, not offensive intended...) and unfair.
B-E-T-A last time i checked didn't stand for a 100% working product...

kde never worked right for me right of the bat!

Did you have technical problems or just dont like kde? I really couldn tell from your sentence.
If you had KDE technical problems, they could be kde bugs or kde/PC-BSD integration bugs. As this is beta software, that means we are searching for those bugs. Feel free to post about your findings. If you post bugs will be fixed. It's just a matter of time.
If you simply dont like the kde interface, you shouldn't have installed at all.

shame on you who pushed this crap out on the unsuspecting public.

This is free and open source. People choose what to use. Obviously, as beta software it is, i couln't call this perfect but it's shurely not crap. Do you mind what do you mean by crap?

its junk, and i'll be sure to spread the word..

Feel free to do so. You must have a legion of folowers just waiting to hear the bad news. I can tell that just by your post. Unfortunately for us, tomorrow the whole world will rise against us and demand we end this project for good... I fear for the world. you know what happens when you dont like something.

Have to tell you this again. BETA software cannot be compared to finished software. I belive you should ask Macintosh and Microsoft developers for early beta releases of their operating systems and compare these with PC-BSD.
This is an easy to install OS (if you dont have a bug preventing you to do so which hasn't been fixed) compared to any other BSD with the exeption of a similar project caled DesktopBSD. Obviously, you havent used BSD before and therefore shouldn't be using this argument.

just so you know, i more than welcome any discussions on this from anyone, email only though as i plan on uninstalling this as i have a muliple drive setup and will go back to using

I am glad you have a multiple drive setup. i have one myself and i like it too.
No need for emailing, just come here and talk. It's very easy to break any argument you throw in so this will be fun for me. I am patient.
About the multiple drive setup, i hope you have not installed our BETA software on a drive containing valuable data or other os's. It's not very smart. I often see people stressed about losing data/other os's and you look like one of those people. i may be wrong (no offensive intent here).
When i want to try new software, i never get into trouble because i have multiple hard drives, i back up my data and never install software without testing it first on Vmware or an extra hd i also own.
I usually disconnect all other drives when testing on that old drive. It's just for security as i could by accident install an os on the wrong drive or delete important data. People do these mistakes especially when they have multiple drive setups with lots of similar sized hard drives.
I think you should go back to Ubuntu or Suse. I personally wont miss you. Suse Pro and Ubuntu are exellent finished products and most of the time behave like such. I use ubuntu myself and like it. I like gnome more than i like KDE but... that is just subjective... And a desktop environment is not an operative system as you must know...

the invitation stands, i'm serious, although i really don't expect to hear from anyone, but if you feel so inclined, by all means, contact me..

why would i send an e-mail to a stranger... If you want to debate, please be more specific about your complaints and post HERE.

If you dont want to post, better. You free bandwidth and storage space from our server's drives. Any bit you add here is a wasted bit. I am serious. My hotmail account is on my profile but please dont email me. You aren't welcomed to waste my bandwidth and my inbox storage space. Use the forum if you must...

:D

Gotta love this (i am serious) JERK.

Rock on, Renato... I read that load of crap, and you've already responded as I would. What I really want to know is... *what is your damage, jerk?*

I am fully aware that we are dealing with beta software, and I am fully aware of the fact that communication can and will make it better... except when it comes to having to deal with people like you. Sifting thru your bullshit has become qute easy, although, still something akin to watching a trainwreck. I would have thought you and your ilk would have given up when DOS 5.0 was released and you bitched because it had more functions than you could handle.

Piss off!

I've had absolutely no luck in having PCBSD see the display again. I don't see how this is KDE's fault.

Maybe this handbook (http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/x-config.html) can help you.
