Hi

i might reinstall everything all over again
Possibly this time from ports only until i get it right

Unless i get cups working again
so i dont have to pull my hair out lol

i never have much luck with ports as
most of you have :)

Mixing ports and packages always
brings me bad luck

The best thing i ever did was install kde in
less then 30 hours

Ports and packages are the same.

When you compile a port, it creates a package and installs it. It's just that the pre-compiled packages tend to be older.

hi

i see

Well that i did not know

i mean like in the OpenBSD and FreeBSD Forum
They always warn me about mixing ports and packages

Which is why i thought they were different or is it because one may be outdated more then the other

building from the ports always better since it will optimize the package for your hardware, you'll also will need to optimize your make.conf to add your CPU type ..etc.

Yes well im afraid its too late now for just
building from the ports as i had installed a few things
from pbi then the rest from ports and maybe 2 pkg_adds as well

i keep getting different advices and opinions
some people say its ok to mix ports while other say it can break your ports and is very harmful
Then some others say theres no difference at all

it's not too late, you'll just have some un-optimized programs until now (then) :P

Building from the ports will always make sure you have all other ports which needed for any port you will install and will be up to date.

Beside this is FreeBSD standard, ask Oliver about if if you want ;)

Hi

The only reason i have installed packages at times were because of all the stop errors that
drive me crazy all the time and dependencies.

Sometimes i can get around that with pkg_add

When i was using the older version of FreeBSD
i installed the entire KDE from ports in 30 hours

And i believe oly 2 programs from packages
the newer FreeBSD caught me off guard when they moved portupgrade from sysutils
i also had some other issues

i played with OpenBSD which i loved alot too Becasue it is Secure by default policy
and they strogly believe to install from
packages only and not ports

i currently am Using OpenBSD only as my Web and File server and not my Desktop because they dont support Graphics acceleration.
