View Full Version : System starts to freeze after 30 - 45 min

I've used various Linux distros, but I've been wanting to give BSD a whirl for some time now.
I installed PC-BSD last night and everything seemed to go swimmingly. I played around with it for about an hour or so and then shut the system down.
However, this morning, the system works fine for about 30 - 45 min and then starts to freeze up. The mouse works fine, but the system is very sluggish. It can take up to 10 seconds for a typed character to appear, and windows usually take about 2 - 3 seconds to focus after clicking in them. I'm not able to kill X with Ctl+Alt+Bkspace or switch to another virtual terminal. However, if I hit the power button, the system starts to shut down after about 5 seconds. I've tried this multiple times, but it still seems to have problems. This occurs using the laptop's keyboard and also using an external USB keyboard.
I'm running PC-BSD on a Thinkpad R51 with an ATI Mobility 9000 and 768 megs of RAM. More info about the laptop can be found here: http://thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:R51
The system is basically a stock install. I've installed a several of PBI's (OpenOffice, Opera, Flash, K3B), but nothing that should cause this problem.
Any ideas? I've searched through the forums, but haven't come up with much info.

Load up KSysGuard and see if there are any processes taking up a large amount of CPU usage.

I installed PC-BSD 1.4RC on my laptop (Dell C840) and everything loaded just fine. The problem is that after logging in and KDE is loaded, I can only try things for a few minutes (less than 5) before everything freezes except the mouse pointer. Can't minimize/maximize/move windows. Can't close anything. Other than the mouse pointer, the system is 100% unresponsive. Can't restart X with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace.
I usually have enough time to load Firefox, but a sure-fire way freeze it is to actually attempt to visit a web page. Instantly I get the freeze no matter what the page is. Happens with Konqueror too.
Any suggestions?

hey i have also an nvidia driver... and i found the problem!!!
The problem is really with the nvidia drivers... because now i'm using nv and the system is stable!!! also i've been digging around and it seems a lot of people are getting problems with the nvidia drivers... but another thing that i'm quite positive about the drivers installation is this...
according to the nvidia
"The 1.0-71xx series supports TNT, TNT2, GeForce 256, and GeForce2 GPUs. The 1.0-96xx series supports GeForce2 MX, GeForce3, GeForce4, and Quadro4 GPUs"
So the drivers icluded for us are wrong...
look under here

i will try it with the 1.0.96xx drivers to see if there is any stability issue!!! if not the people on the PCBSD team should include the 1.0.06xx drivers

I regularly use the .96xx drivers from Nvidia to get this graphics card working in Linux. I'll give that a try as well and see if it stabilizes. I also get to do odd things with my very problematic panel in Linux that I didn't have to in PC-BSD. I'll report if I have to do my normal fix after installing the driver.
I only chose the .71xx driver because the .96xx driver was not listed as an option, only the .97xx and newer drivers. I guess it's time to look into getting a newer thrasher/test laptop for my distro-hopping tinkering!

09-10-2007, 08:44 PM
well it is now stable and running i even put beryl to run with this!!!
This is the way!!!
Download the 96xx driver-> from nvidia
then you have to change some makefiles as that driver will look in the wrong place for directory modules...
/your/directory//nvidia-driver/x11/driver (change to DRIVERDIR= ${X11BASE}/lib/modules/drivers in DRIVERDIR= ${X11BASE}/lib/xorg/modules/drivers
/your/directory//nvidia-driver/x11/extension (change to LIBDIR= ${X11BASE}/lib/modules/extensions in LIBDIR= ${X11BASE}/lib/xorg/modules/extensions
now do
->make install clean
and then
->nvidia-xconfig
->edit /boot/loader.conf
add this line to it ->nvidia_load="YES"
now you have to edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
add the lines that are missing
->
Section "Module"
Load "extmod"
Load "record"
Load "dbe"
Load "glx"
Load "xtrap"

Section "Screen"

Option "RenderAccel" "True"
Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"
Section "Extensions"

EndSection
well it's done in the end you should have an xorg.conf very close to this

I'm using a Nvidia GeForce 6150SE 3D card which isn't on your list.
Do you think your procedure will still work - or would it be risky to try?
Note: Nvidia's web-site lists the 100.14.11 as correct for this card. But choosing it during PC-BSD display config and trying to reinstall it and earlier versions again later from ports didn't work.
Thanks

so download the nvidia driver NVIDIA-FreeBSD-x86-100.14.11.tar.gz
then you should edit it, because it doesn't know where the modules are!!!
so untar it
then change
/your/directory//nvidia-driver/x11/driver (change to DRIVERDIR= ${X11BASE}/lib/modules/drivers in DRIVERDIR= ${X11BASE}/lib/xorg/modules/drivers
/your/directory//nvidia-driver/x11/extension (change to LIBDIR= ${X11BASE}/lib/modules/extensions in LIBDIR= ${X11BASE}/lib/xorg/modules/extensions
/your/directory//nvidia-driver/x11/lib (change to LIBDIR= ${X11BASE}/lib/modules in LIBDIR= ${X11BASE}/lib/xorg/modules
so theres an extra line to edit, regarding to the previous one then do the rest as the previous method!!! but in order for you don't get mistaken i included on this post!!! ->continue here->
now do
->make install clean
and then
->nvidia-xconfig
->edit /boot/loader.conf
add this line to it ->nvidia_load="YES"
now you have to edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
add the lines that are missing
->

Simple the first post that i made only have to lines to edit
Download the 96xx driver-> from nvidia
then you have to change some makefiles as that driver will look in the wrong place for directory modules...
/your/directory//nvidia-driver/x11/driver (change to DRIVERDIR= ${X11BASE}/lib/modules/drivers in DRIVERDIR= ${X11BASE}/lib/xorg/modules/drivers
/your/directory//nvidia-driver/x11/extension (change to LIBDIR= ${X11BASE}/lib/modules/extensions in LIBDIR= ${X11BASE}/lib/xorg/modules/extensions
now do
->make install clean
the new post i make for your card basically only haves an extra line to edit
so untar it
->continue here->
It's the same procedure for both but one haves one line more
/your/directory//nvidia-driver/x11/lib (change to LIBDIR= ${X11BASE}/lib/modules in LIBDIR= ${X11BASE}/lib/xorg/modules
