I had a successful install (dual-boot) on my Fujitsu laptop (screen 1280x800). It looks good - I like it.

I used a PC-BSD DVD that my friend/co-worker got at the recent Linux Expo in Los Angeles.

My initial problem with installing it (or anything else) had to do with the BIOS on this laptop. This has to do with Insyde BIOS weirdness. When I chose to boot from CD/DVD it didn't work (no Linux distro worked/booted either). Then I found that I had to choose the special BIOS boot menu instead of boot from CD selection (Insyde BIOS is weird - I don't like it).

After this, the install went without a flaw. It looks great.

Now I want to install OpenOffice and Mozilla on it. When I figure this out I will be happy. :)

One more comment.

I have a Sound Blaster card that I had plugged into the laptop while installing PC-BSD. The boot message seemed to indicate that it was recognized. However, if I have this card in the laptop when I boot PC-BSD it hangs forever - will not finish booting. I have to remove the card to get it to boot.

I'll search the boards and so forth to see if anyone knows why this is so.

Anyway, thanks. I like it so far.

Using PCBSD brings another happy advantage: the PBI packaging scheme. Just browse http://www.pbidir.com and download the desired PBI file. Once downloaded, double click it and it will install after some trivial clicks.

The general consensus with such external usb devices is that the kernel first attempts to mount them as block devices and never seems to get over this (hangs).
I am unsure if you'll be able to find a solution to this FreeBSD oriented problem. Just wait until we update the base system to FreeBSD 6.2, then you'll be able to test again.

Does the card work (ie do you hear sounds in KDE)?
