I don't know if you've ever had hardware failure, but its a traumatic experience the first few times.

True, but at least the PSU can be easily replaced :D

I'll never forget the time I came back from Italy and booted my computer only to find it had suffered hard disk failure! Probably the worst component to go IMHO, and at the time I didn't backup very often. Needless to say that I backup religiously now and have 5 copies of my critical data backed up onto 3 machines (5 HD's) on 2 sites.

But anyway, I wouldn't buy too cheap a new PSU if I were you, I bought a cheap one in a rush once (from PCWorld :shock: ) only to have the wires melt and it set on fire when I plugged it in! Faulty unit, had a hell of a time proving it to PC-World. Since then I mail order everything. No high street stores (within driving distance) sell even semi decent components so I have to mail order everything. Never mind.

My flatmates sister came for a visit. She really got into Need For Speed (some version) and was racing around like a mad thing.

The wall behind the computer all lit up with blue flashes, and smoke came out of the back of the computer case. PSU burnout. And the SOUND! WOW!

My flatmates sister came for a visit.Whenever a sentence starts off like that or similar to that, I know the story cannot end well. Its that relative of someone you know that can totally ruin your day just by "suggesting" something bad might happen.
