keywords: FreeBSD PC-BSD CURRENT STABLE acpi apic apm serial port hint sio 0 disabled hangs up ACER laptop notebook loader.conf device.hints bios

I can't boot any FreeBSD or PC-BSD by default option with this ACER TravelMate 245LC. Do not buy this notebook even in ebay, because it is horible slow. It is not mine, thanks to god.

http://www.ciao.co.uk/Acer_TravelMate_245LC__6518499

Everytime it stops around sio0 device and after some seconds, there are some loops and, temperature grows up quickly, of course cooling fan speeds up to maximum and it has to be finished with holding for 4s power-off button, because nothing helps at this point.

I do not why sio devices stop booting. In bios serial, paralel and usb legacy ports or support is turned off.

Without acpi I am without apm, battery control and others.

I would like to have it all. Please help me. :)

I have another problems with build-in intel grafic card and cisco aironet 350, but it is another issue, so we will not mix it up. :arrow: :roll:

Did you try turning them on in the BIOS instead of off?

No, I didn't.
Today I tried and with these options in bios changed from disabled to enabled:
Infrared port
Parallel port
Legacy usb support

But it didn't help me at all as I guessed.

The laptop does not have serial ports at all, what I did not say before.

Maybe some changes in /boot/loader.conf or /boot/device.hints to disable sio at all ?

I do not know, but without acpi and apm, the laptop is like super jet motor.

In specification for this acer notebook, there is acpi 1.0b.

Please help me!

Windows XP has no problems with acpi and apm.

It very well may be that the chipset has the serial I/Os but nothing connected to them. There is probably a hint flag you can use but you would have to wait for Tim or antik to wander along to tell you how to use it...I don't know.

Try adding the following lines to /boot/device.hints

hint.sio.0.disabled="1"
hint.sio.1.disabled="1"

That should disable sio0 and sio1.

Thanks Tim but I think he'll need to do these at the install line but I don't know/can't remember at what point in the installer you can do that...

Really to device.hints ? Perhaps to loader.conf is cleaner ? Or am I mistaken ?

Thanks! IT WORKS NOW !!! IT IS SOLVED NOW !!!

With one little chage, not /boot/device.hints file is preferred, I puted it to loader.conf, because man device.hints has see also loader.conf. I think authors want user to put custom settings to loader.conf file.

Yes, u r right. Next time when I will install pc-bsd 1.4, I will hit option 6 in bootting menu and will do

set hint.sio.0.disabled="1"
set hint.sio.1.disabled="1"
show ... to check it
boot

after system will boot up well, I would check it again by kenv command.

man device.hints(5)
