View Full Version : [1.3beta1] Various bugs
Hi,
Firstly I would like to tell the developers that I really appreciate PCBSD. I've used v1.2 (and a few earlier versions) on my old laptop for quite som time and I'm really happy using it.
The machine is a Dell Latitude CPt C, Pentium II - 400MHz, 256MB RAM, 1024x768 LCD display.
Problems:
1) On first restart after installation an error appears:
Error - KDesktop
Could not start process Unable to create io-slave:
klauncher said: .
2) In console (not Konsole) / CTRL-ALT-F1:
I chose Swedish keyboard in the installation program, but still English after installation.
3) /etc/XF86Config
Wrong keyboard. As stated above, I chose Swedish in the installer, but here it's "us".
Wrong monitor detection. Or at least wrong frequency for 1024x768 LCD.
I had to replace /etc/XF86Config with a hacked one I have been using for years in order to get a useful desktop for my LCD display.
4) Kopete
Kopete is equipped with the famous ICQ bug. It's impossible to connect to the ICQ network. Patches are available.
5) Screensaver
Blanks screen after a while but doesn't start my screen saver of choise: "clock".
6) hostname: pcbsd-1035
Why?
TIA,
Mikael

Thank you for trying the 1.3beta and reporting issues!
Remember that this is a beta version and various stuff are still being tested.
1) Does this error go on saying something about a sound card not working? If it does then your sound card was not detected.
2) The beta version includes ONLY english language
3) I have a half-baked monitor here, nothing at all is detected and I have to manually enter all info ALWAYS on ALL distros on the planet. Monitor detection is been worked on since previous versions and lots of progress has been made.
4) Believe it or not I can't connect to ICQ either but using Gaim! I don't know what happened to this network. My registration there is in the 10-year life span. I detest from installing the original ICQ client it looks like a giant piece of spamware.
5) This is a known bug
6) Putting a random number after a computer name makes some sense as it becomes comparatively unique for the local network. I would prefer this number to be at least a 8digit hex number just for complications sake.

It can also be changed in the advanced install

Thank you for the quick answer!
You're welcome! But as a user of PCBSD it's in my interest to test the software before it's released. And I'm aware of the beta status. That's why I filled the report :-)
1) Does this error go on saying something about a sound card not working? If it does then your sound card was not detected.
No. The error says only what I wrote in the original post. The sound card is working by the way. In Linux (and ALSA) this soundcard never worked it always froze the system when loading the module. Linux and OSS works well. It's a NeoMagic chip. More info on request.
2) The beta version includes ONLY english language
Ok. I didn't know that.

Most Linux distros knowadays seem to know how to detect flat screens and LCD panels and such. Should be possible to have the same ease of use in a FreeBSD-based desktop system.

We seem to misunderstand eachother here. I was reporting a bug in Kopete. It's a well-known bug, and there is a fix for it. I know gaim and other software work well.
5) This is a known bug
There was a similar bug in PCBSD v1.2 but it behaved differently. That's why I reported it here.
6) Putting a random number after a computer name makes some sense as it becomes comparatively unique for the local network. I would prefer this number to be at least a 8digit hex number just for complications sake.
Ok. Seems like a goog idea. And it seems I will visit the advanced install next time to see what goodies I may find there :-)

I just hope most of the people who have downloaded the *beta* remember that too :-)
