Kate is driving me SPARE! Auto Indenting?

Does anyone know if the editor kate auto indents? I've tried the configure kate and tools options for indentation, but everthing just aligns hard left.

Is there an IDE about (preferably a lite one as I'm only doing shell scripts, but happy to install anything that works) that DOES auto indent, like on a new if/then?

I think it does, its based on kwrite which I think has auto-indent, or at least I am sure it does when doing coding,

but it doesn't say how to find it, and I havent used either program in a while

I think its called smart indent

It should auto indent if you are using a recognised code ie C, C++, HTML and PERL, I'm not sure if that support is a seperate download or not, like syntax colouring
