My friend Bill told me about PCBSD so I installed it.
Everytime I boot up I get an Informational - artsmessage that says:
Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp0.1 can't be opened (no such file or directory)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device

Does this mean my sound card is no good? How can I tell?
I REALLY don't want to install Windows just to find out because in Windows it will either work or it won't work. I'm trying to get away from Windows...

I will probably need to know how to login as root because I don't know.

Check here to see if your card is supported
http://www.FreeBSD.org/releases/5.4R/ha ... html#AUDIO (http://www.FreeBSD.org/releases/5.4R/hardware-i386.html#AUDIO)
and here to find out how to initialize it
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO885 ... setup.html (http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/sound-setup.html)
All you need to do normally is add a line to /boot/loader.conf.
