I have been installing .PBI's whenever possible but ports is needed many times for things too.
Well everything I install with .PBI doesn't show up as installed in the ports list ever. And everything I install in ports never shows up in my start menu or anywhere else where I can find a place to "Start" it. Often these are added libraries and such that work fine once installed. I just don't have access to them to setup options or anything if there are any I wouldn't know.
I installed firefox from ports once, it took 5 hours....
It did NOT show up on my start menu and I NEVER found a place to open the browser. Then the .PBI for firefox came out and I installed it in 2 mins and was browsing with ease. So I am a BIG fan of .PBI's. It would be nice if .PBI installs actually registered in the ports tree as installed programs I think. I realize there may be issues unforseen with this because I can't imagine no one noticed .PBI's didnt register in the ports tree. But it probably would be better overall if one part of the system did know that the other part existed. This could be part of why Zlib and PAMP refuse to work together.
If ports and .PBI were to get together though then we could install stuff with .PBI's that actually registered as installed programs in the ports list (just install kports and open it and check the list of your installed ports and see if Kports is installed).
It is pretty funny to install Kports then open Kports and search "kports" and find out that Kports is not actually installed LOL. Some things I have installed in ports AND .PBI to try and fix this and some of the incompatabilities that come from it. This works about 25% of the time. Most of the time it ends in "failed" but never gives me a clue that I understand as to why. Just "error 1" usually. But not always. Sometimes it fixes my problem!
Anyway my main thing is that stuff doesn't work and it seems that between Ports and Kports and .PBi's lies some kind of answer.
They need to all meet each other,
