Hello, I have PC-BSD 1.2 and have considerable problems with the new Nvidia driver. I have 6600 GT AGP and as soon as I instal a driver about PBI what also goes and restarts the PC, the screen remains simply black and I have tried it now 5x and I say to you that I soon freak out!!! So what does it lie with?

Hi Gerard,
if you can, try to install PC-BSD Release 1.1 and install there the Nvidia driver (downloading the PBI). If it works you have got my same problem and I don't have got solution :(.
Seems that something in the current KDE 3.5.x is wrong with some nvidia card (I've a 5900Xt that can't be used anymore starting with PC-BSD 1.2 :( - with PC-BSD 1.1 it worked like a charm).
The solution ?... nothing only wait for a new KDE release or revert the installation to the previous KDE 3.5.2 system, but I don't know how to do this last task :(.
Sorry mate and welcome in NVIDIA driver Hell :).

can you say in a more detailed way what did you do? in case you didn't do it "properly", here's what you should do to work without hickups:
fresh install pcbsd, then install the ports tree:
# su -
[password]
# cvsup /root/ports-supfile
[wait to complete]
# cd /usr/ports/x11/nvidia-driver-1.0.8762
# make install clean
and it should compile just nice. after this tupe:
# nvidia-xconfig
and that should change your driver in /etc/X11/XF86Config from the vesa (or nv) to the nvidia driver and make the proper adjustments. log out from the graphical interface then, at the login window, press Ctrl-Alt-Backspace and you should see the nvidia logo shortly.
good luck.

  with Nvidia 5900XT ? are you sure ?
I always tought that wasn't a kernel problem because I tested PC-BSD 1.2 with the 1.1 kernel and was not working.
Anyway I'll reinstall 1.3 Kernel and I'll test.
Thanks.

Sorry but for me this was not working. I installed and compiled from source the driver and was not working for me.
Nvidia logo was scrambled and the PC lock up shortly after.
I repeat myself. I've got this problem ONLY with PC-BSD 1.2. No problem at all with PC-BSd 1.1. Obviously the card is FULLY working. No problem on it.

The Problem still there.
Do you know any way to restore the previous KDE system (the one present in PC-BSD 1.1 ) ?

For what I know the KDE system was updated too from 3.5.2 to 3.5.3.
Anyway during all my test I disable the DRM without success.
In order I've do this test:
1) Switched back kernel to the PC-BSD 1.1 one.
2) Switched back the Xorg server to the one present in PC-BSD 1.1.
3) Switched back the Xorg client to the one present in PC-BSD 1.1.
4) Removed the DRM support
All this tentative fail with nvidia driver and my 5900XT.
The last thing to do is switch back the KDE system but this becomed too much complicated for me.
AHH !!! a really important thing. ROFreesbie works so good with nvidia driver and my Nvidia 5900XT :) just like PC-BSD 1.1.
Please Antik can you try to build a PBI that replace the current KDE 3.5.3 with the 3.5.2 version?
Thanks in advance.

Try with this new kernel (http://forums.pcbsd.org/viewtopic.php?p=30115#30115).
Restoring older KDE is too much work right now- but we have to find out what causing these problems.

Ok.. I'll test this Kernel too, but I've lost any hope :( to get back my 5900XT.
But I would like to do some questions.
Why the nvidia driver problem should be a Kernel related problem if the PC-BSD 1.1 Kernel, where the card run fine, fail to run the same card on PC-BSD 1.2 ?
And, for what you know, which is the KDE system release that run on rofreesbie? In the lastest release 1.2 my 5900XT works flawless with nvidia driver, then, if rofreesbie 1.2 use KDE 3.5.3, we can start deeply investigating inside PC-BSD to spot the component that are generating the failure but if it isn't KDE 3.5.3 ... why whe are trying to spot the problem in other section when the major suspected area is KDE 3.5.3?
Antik, you can be sure, I'm really pissed off about this problem, really really really pissed off. Think about that... to solve the problem, continuing using Nvidia accelerated driver with my beloved PC-BSD system, I've brought a 6800GT :( :( that cost a lot of money and this is not the right way to face the problem. Sure, I Should be used Release 1.1 but I'll lost all the update and all the improvement then, because I'm a noob then I'm impotent to spot and solve the problem then, to prevent a BIG MEGA headache, I've do the choose to change the card!!
Anyway I'll be really happy to have it back for other my PC's. I don't want to buy other 6800.
Is really frustating to see that other distro works ok with your card and the your beloved not. :( :( :(
I can well understand the state of Gerhard and why he was a little bit upset for no answers from PC-BSD team.

I tried ReFreeSBIE already and it got KDE 3.5.1. I don't think that this driver problem is related to KDE in any kind. Unfortunately I don't have any nvidia card here- matrox and ati shop only, sry. Ask Kris, he is NVidia guy.

... and what about Xorg server and client of rofreesbie 1.2 ?
Anyway I've already asked kris for this problem :( :( without success.
Anyway I switched back kernel (copied the single processor's kernel compressed file from 1.1 and renaming it as 1.2 smp, copied it in the PCBSD 1.2 then switched it from the control panel to 1.2SMP that was 1.1), Xorg server and client to PC-BSD 1.1 release ( creating package with Pkg_create from 1.1 and installing it to 1.2 with Pkg_remove and Pkg_add ) and removed the DRI too (with pkg_remove from 1.2 ). The problem still there. The only thing that I can't swiched back vas the KDE system because I don't know how this can be done.
I know it is a lot of work but if you can do a PBI that switch back to 3.5.2 ( taking the package from PC-BSD 1.1 without compiling nothing ) or build a PBI that cointain the intere set (Xorg client, server and KDE system from PC-BSD 1.1) I'll test it for sure, at least you have tried to help a mate :).
Anyway something was wrong updating from 1.1 to 1.2.
I asked this to Kris this but a lot of work must be done and kris is really busy.

Antik ... I've got an idea.
PCBSD 1.11a - Changelog
6-25-06 (Kris Moore)
--------------------------
* Fixed issues with compat5x libraries not working.
* Fixed problem with online updater showing available updates when none are available.
PCBSD 1.11 - Changelog
6-13-06 (Kris Moore)
--------------------------
* Updated installed ports to current versions as of 6-12-06
* Updated KDE to 3.5.3
* Removed linux-base-rh9 port from default install, allowing PBI developers to
install their own. (Not removed from patch update)
* Added additional video drivers to default kernel. (Intel 3D, Voodoo, etc)
* Adding users now uses the /usr/share/skel template.
* Cleaned up fonts, uses Sans Serif family by default now.
* Allowed users to change account icon in kdmrc
* Changed console resolution to 800x600
* Cleaned up /etc/resolv.conf
* Fixed IPV6 hostname in /etc/hosts
According with the change log the update to kde 3.5.3. was done updating from 1.1 to 1.11 ( I've got there the nvidia driver problem that still there in 1.2).
To update PC-BSD 1.1 to 1.11 a PBi was done. What do you think about modify the install script of the PBI that update 1.1 to 1.11 removing only the update section of KDE system ?
I'll provide to install the 1.1 and update it to 1.11 with this patched PBI. If the problem is solved we can know for sure that the problem is KDE related.
Then I'll update 1.11 to 1.2 to be sure about the problem.
What do you think about? can you go that way?

I well know this. Currently I'm using a 6800 GT AGP with PC-BSD 1.2 too without problem with PBI nvidia driver (I'm currently playing games like Quake IV , Doom3, Return Castle wolfenstain and America's Army with PC-BSD 1.2). The major problem that I've got was with my previous nvidia card (5900XT) that was fully working with PC-BSD 1.1, that don't work anymore (not electronics related problem) starting from PC-BSD 1.11 and still not working with PC-BSD 1.2.

The new driver works here but i don't get my screensavers working.

I updated my xorg-server and my screensavers quit working too...or when they started, resulted in X crashing. I finally updated to the latest drivers, removed my xorg.conf file from /etc/X11. ran nvidia-xconfig and manually updated my XF86Config file. Look here for apps (nvidia-xconfig), instructions, FAQ and problem solving. Maybe that will help.

So I have gone through all solutions and none of the solutions has helped still nichteinmal pc-bsd 1.3 beta, the screen remains simply black and I am meanwhile of the opinion that you have with PC-BSD irgentetwas wrong programiert or the outdated KDE version with pc-bsd is just schrott and I ask myself allenernstes, why you do not insert there new automatically with, how is one able to only? You should work there a little bit sorgfälltiger with pbi's and test before also. Solangsam I become really sour!!! I have to instal escht no goat every time mine pc-bsd anew, m only because to her it simply does not make the drivers right to insert and there is enough here which have considerable problems with it.

My 2 cents. I have Nvidia6600 PCIe 256DDR onboard. I have used both of the Nvidia PBI installers for the last two Nvidia releases and the FreeBSD Nvidia driver from their site and all have worked perfect. I have done this on with the 1.2 and 1.3 beta kernel, no hitches. :D I did not have such great luck with the ports install. Truthfully, the FreeBSD driver from Nvidia is very simple and the manual install has worked the best for me. 8)

Is there any update on the fx5900 nVidia driver issue?. I installed PC-BSD 1.2 today, and tried to install the 8774 driver from pbiDIR for my fx5900xt ultra card. The machine froze when I got to the nVidia splash screen, which was broken up (scrambled) by the way. This is a show-stopper for me using this OS. Any thoughts before I move on? I compared XF86Config files before and after and the only differences were the 'driver "nvidia"' lines and 'load "dri"' lines. The original file loaded dri, the one with the pbi installed 8774 did not.

There are NVIDIA-FreeBSD-x86-1.0-9625 avaiable at nzone.com (http://www.nzone.com/object/nzone_downloads_freebsd_display_x86_1.0-9625.html) that may work (you have to download, extract to a directory and do a make install) but they are not ready for prime time yet.

I tried this Beta driver and it produced the same problem, only now I have a frozen/scrambled Nvidia Beta screen :). Earlier I had also installed/compiled the latest nvidia-driver from ports, same problem. I agree with whomever said in this thread earlier that this does not appear to be an Nvidia driver problem. It's a PCBSD and/or KDE problem. The main issue in isolating the problem is that the /var/log/XFree86.0.log gets overwritten due to the system freeze and subsequent reboot. Any ideas there on how to capture an error?
As a side note, the card is supported;

PC-BSD should provide /var/log/Xorg.0.log and /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old
the .old file is the file from previous run

Only that I have experience with missing things myself because I do not read as much as I should. No insult intended, just covering a base, that's all. The readme's usually have info about the dri line and others which may or may not have to be removed from the config file. 8)

just a note, my fx 5700 ultra is having the same problem. None of the solutions in this thread have given me a fix. I'm about to try that new kernel that was posted, so I'll update this in a few.
*update: the change the 1.3 kernel that was posted in a response above didn't fix my problem with the nvidia driver, but it did allow me to access more screen resolutions in X/KDE. I still can't run my lcd at 1680x1050, but I can run it at 1280x1024, when with the 1.2 kernel I could only run at 1024x768 (even with other resolutions added to XF86Config)

I got the same problem. I got an Nvidia 6600gt AGP 128 and I tried installing pbi driver. It will go black now when I boot.
I remember reading something when the driver was finished installing saying if the screen does not show go to root and type 'nvremove' ?\
Where the hell do I type this command and how do i get my BSD back?
Just login and do su and then run the command, although, I have never had any luck with that command myself. Maybe you will better luck than I did. :D

That command doesn't work because that file doesn't exist...type instead rmnvida and that should undo what the PBI created.

Yea I made it easy for myself and just reinstalled the whole os. I have only been using PC BSD for three days now.
I have two apple computers and a gentoo box so i am not that unix retarded, but PC BSD is a little different to me.
I think for the video card I will just way till the new version of BSD and or new kernel.
Anyone know when that would be coming out.

I expect it by Jan or Fed of 2007 with luck.

If you "sort of" get into X but can't type, remember that Ctrl-Alt-[F1 - F8] get you into virtual text consoles, where you can log in a root and run the necessary commands. And that Ctrl-Alt-Backspace kills the X driver, although if you have the X login screen enabled, it will just fire that back up.
