My father has an old Emachines desktop that I would like to install PC-BSD on. He is very computer iliterate so I need to be able to easily set up everything he needs. My old P-II Dell no longer works after 1.11, so I need to know if this will work or not.

It is a Celeron 500 or 600 (PIII era I believe) with 192MB RAM, (originally 64MB with windows ME  ) from around early 2001 late 2000.

He also has a newer Cannon printer and scanner that I need to get to work as well.

Anyone see any problems with this?

I'm not sure it depends on the CPU's core I think, in Intel's "Family/Model/Stepping" scheme, Mendocino CPUs are family 6, model 6. If that means I686 I don't know, but the Coppermine-128's should be fine 4 sure. Basicly Medocino=Celeron version of PII, Coppermine-128=Celeron version of PIII

If it's a 600Mhz or better it should work no doubt in my mind, if it's 500~533Mhz it's a fifty fifty chance depending on how old the CPU itself is, we're basicly talking Aug1999/Jan2000 vs Mar2000 when the 533Mhz Celeron 533A /w P3 style core popped on market.

If you have windows installed you might try to see if it's got the class of processor some where.

My I686 Pentium D is an x86 Family 15 Model 6 Stepping 2, but I'm not sure if that's related to weather a chip's I586 or I686 or not.

I'm not worried about the processor, perhaps I worded the title wrong. I'm looking for any specific problems to this hardware, especially the sound card, printer, and scanner. I'll try and get more specifics, but for now I'm just looking for any obvious problems.

thanks,

it should run on that, although to run well it would be a good idea to get more memory

PC-BSD runs just fine on my ThinkPad 500MHz Celeron with 320MB of ram. Hdd is 20GB and this IBM piece of fine equipment is enough to watch divx fullscreen, listen to music, browse web, post this message and even run OpenOffice.

Most Canon scanners and printers should work. My Canoscan Lide 60 is recognized. Some of the fancier Canon scanners can be an issue but most just loose some of the more elaborate functions. The printers are usually not an issue.
