Is the AMD K6-2 processor supported? I have a K6-2 450 machine. FreeBSD 5.X or 6.X installs fine on this machine. Previous versions of PC-BSD installed fine. Current versions stop shortly after bootup and complain about an unsupported CPU. Has K6-2 processor support been removed from PCS BSD?

I am not sure if K6-2 is 686 or 586 architecture processor. But all 686 ones starting from Pentium Pro is working just fine.

I looked it up and it is classified as an i586 processor. I guess that explains it.
Darn. I really like PC-BSD. Maybe I'll break down and put it on my PIII-500. I have an Athlon 2800+ laptop, but is is reserved for Ubuntu and XP-Pro.

I take it that these only supprt i686 processors and that cpus of the amd - k6 are demend to be too slow :?:
why then did the installer not popup an error/warning about the cpu being a bit slow? thinks it's a question for the installer forum really.
what version could i get to try that would work with my cpu?

The minimal specs are listed in the [url=http://docs.pcbsd.org/guide/chap2.1.htmlquick guide[/url] for what is needed.
BTW I think we should put more information about this on the main site.

PCBSD RC1 obviously had a better installer than current releases. I still have
a CD that I burnt from the very 1st release. It works on my AMD K-6 450 mhz
computer.
The current releases do not.
I was very enthusiastic about learning
the BSD's and thought PCBSD would be a good learning process.
I have continued to monitor the Operating System and attempt every once in a while to download burn and run...all to no avail.
My fault though!!! I downloaded updates and had the First Red Hat version working, but, alas I did not backup and previous patches for upgrade have not been archived by PCBSD for public use.
I had an AMD K-7 1.1 ghz which could run all the versions but that sucker died
a shameful death, the motherboard quit working, like the bad mother it was!
Ubuntu 6.06 ,Suse 10.1, Debian 3.1, Fedora Core 5, Pclinux OS all run very well on the AMD K6 architecture.Desktop BSD and currrent PCBSD releases do not. Funny thing WIN XP professional does as well, but, not Vista.
Mandriva 2006 won't boot, Mandriva 2007 boots but hangs on mouse.Despite several different boot strategies and attempts.
PCBSD though is a very good Operating System and has come a long way.
If my old computer one day dies and I buy a new one, I will try PCBSD again.

Vista requires newer CPUs and more RAM to function. The PC-BSD kernel build is just optimized for current CPU's at the price of not offically supporting an older arch.
Wouldn't mind trying to install FreeBSD on a 486 if it didn't mean ISA/EISA.

What do you mea by "do not"? Did the CD fail to boot? Did PC-BSD install and then not work?

K-6 is no longer an option.
@cletusbaird: I think if you search these forums there is probably a post somewhere and probably from antik that will tell you how to modify and compile the PC-BSD kernel for K-6 support.

Thanks Drache will check forum and see if Antik has some advice for Kernel
Modification. Your answer does fit pretty good because the earlier releases that did work were based on 2.4 linux or bsd equivalent. Where the current ones are probably 2.6 kernel equivalents.
If modification is possible...I will attempt
