I like translucent menu's; they're nice and cool. What about having them by default?

Composite extension is unstable with some video drivers and this is only limiting factor so far.

ummm, i've set this up on low-spec comps, even some without video-card, without probs.
In case anybody wants it, this is how to enable translucent menu's:
-> Menu -> Control Center -> Style -> Tab "Effects" -> Menu Effect = "Make Translucent"

Thank you kindly I'll try that on Dixie (my laptop).
I've never cared much for the see through stuff beyond my terminal, but after watching some videos on xgl got me interested.
Theres no reason to make things translucent by default, this is supposed to be a Easy to use not hard to read OS.
Would be nice if the "Crystal" window decore was part of the install though considering Windows Vista (Flopsta me hope!).

What I feel is that this makes the menu "dirty"

I really like such things, furthermore I think it looks cleaner.
BTW. I have tried xgl on suse (it is installed really easy), I liked speed improvement in moving windows ant task switching (alt+tab), exposing windows, but totally hated boxed desktop and wobby effects. It is pretty unstable under KDE, or as I could say, nonintegrated too well. In my opinion xgl is not a solution, for example when you resize window, it has to be rearranged, so it takes time and slowsdown as usual. About videos - they don't show all the potential of xgl, however.

The transparency works just fine on the default vesa drivers at 1024x768 running on an ati x800xl. It looks great for everything except (my favorite desktop backround) the pure white bsd daemon. Its a great feature.thanks for the tip
