I've noticed on windows I usually play music with my volume set 2 notchs down on the sound card, and 10-20% media player volume.

With defaults for arts, I'm needing to put xmms and amarok (xine engine) at %76-100 volume to actually here my MP3's, thats not good when the stuff gets rocking.

How can I turn things up a bit without having to turn up my media players?

Sound card = Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 4 using emu10kx driver. I think the chipset is emu10k3 but I can not be sure for as much as I know about sound cards.

SAL1600# cat /var/run/dmesg.boot | grep "emu10kx" | less
emu10kx0: <Creative Audigy 2 Value (Unknown model) [SB????]> port 0x1040-0x107f
irq 22 at device 1.0 on pci6
pcm0: <EMU10Kx PCM Interface> on emu10kx0

I dunno, the sound system for my laptop and desktop has sound louder on *NIX than Windows.
