View Full Version : Incorporating Yast

YaST is open source now, why not take advantage of an already well written tool for configuring a system? You could even improve upon it greatly, there are things that definitely could be better.

The ultimate goal...

Some sort of network based config, not webmin... but like yast, except you can connect to any computer from say a desktop and configure it using a YaST like tool. This would be GREAT for both server admins, coporate users, and even home users (as it would allow for all gui config of hardware, and services).

If you could implement something like that on top of PC-BSD along with the already interesting PBI idea, I believe PC-BSD would really have something to offer above and beyond the already countless *nix variants.

Target ease of use not just for you and me, but for people that have to deal with 100 boxes and you'll put something useful out.

I dont like cutting through corners but i think we should use all open source available utillities, applications, tools to get tasks done right now. we cant simply wait for the control apps to be created while time passes. Frst, let's get al the features working by using outside code. After that, if we think we can make it better we can implement our own solutions.

Cheers!

It's not cutting corners, open source is all about code reuse and not reinventing the wheel, that said, Yast is a poorly designed mess IMHO, I'm sure we can do a lot better.

This is where the current workings on it is going I think. Might be wrong.

I still don't understand why no-one wants to do it in konqueror - it can do and look like anything if you want it to, and already has some demonstration system config screens built in.
