I think both projects DesktopBSD and PC-BSD should join forces. They have the same goals basically.

Update to FreeBSD 5.5-PRERELEASE ???
I'm deff gonna look around DBSD's site, since I always see it mentionded when some one asks for a ports front end or something 8-)

6.1 and 5.5 Beta. 6.0 / 5.4 current.
I'm pretty sure 6.0 is the current production release, 5.4 the legacy one. so odds are when we move on to FreeBSD 7x the 5x will be supsided by the current FreeBSD 6x I geuss.
http://www.freebsd.org/releng/ maybe some help.

i think the desktopbsd guys are not for the pbi idea...yes, but in kde, freebsd optimizing they could work in a team.

Dingens, you have hit the nail with your post.
Thre way i see it, the more we share on that issue, the better. I am not one of the decision makers in any of the projects though :(

Oops... DesktopBSD homepage is slashdotted... What happens when PC-BSD release goes online? We have to prepare for this somehow. I think when http query arrives from /. then http://www.pcbsd.org must show them a simple text based homepage.

When the DBSD guys have released their port we can install it on pcbsd and have best of both worlds.... ;-)

After all what is the very difference between PC-BSD and DesktopBSD? They differ on some details, but they're both FreeBSD + KDE made accessible, so they can share the "base" (installer, packages, scripts, tweaks, etc) then make their own work. I know it's not that easy to organize, but wouldn't it benefit to both projects?

Right . IMHO the developers should have the same goal and that's it but with some difference between DBSD and Pc-BSD. PC-BSd has focused for all the noob users that don't know how manage and install software, that don't want to bash the head compiling, or trying to fix makefile, while DBSD is focused to have a really userfriendly Freebsd that use a good GUI for the ports.
Looking at how PC-BSD growt in a shortest time I think the Kriss idea is the right one and if one day they can share the same goal and the same idea I'm pretty sure the D-PC-BSD will let the users enjoy so much !!
Bye to all

After looking at D-BSD I believe that PC-BSD is a superior product.
D-BSD doesn't seem to add any functionallity not already in FreeBSD.
I was comfortable with FreeBSD and it's package system but
PC-BSD has spoiled me. If I wanted to revert from the PBI
system I would go back to FreeBSD 6.0.
That is the single reason that I believe PC-BSD will win out.

Yep, but for the ones who prefer the classic FreeBSD way of installing apps and who don't want to set up a desktop system from stratch, DesktopBSD is really nice. And it adds functionalities to KDE, with the ports GUI, for example. This is the way of the middle between FreeBSD and PC-BSD, not an inferior product.
Unfortunately after downloading the dvd iso I couldn't get it to install, the first version that didn't I might add. However no responses so far for my requests for help so perhaps it's going to be another 'lost os' for me.

Probably a hardware compatibility issue...
Probably a hardware compatibility issue...
I guess that's a possibility but since the previous versions of DTBSD installed on the system I would expect this one to also install. If it doesn't then I am back to the stage of being unable to 'trust' any new releases to install which kind of negates any enhancements to the system. It also puts me in the situation of 'Do I really want to waste my time on something that might not work when the next release is issued'. The answer to that is a resounding NO.
The system is an Athlon64 3000 with 1 GB ram so it's not in the too old stages yet.
