View Full Version : Firewall
Hi, I am downloading the ISO as I type. I was just wondering if there was a GUI frontend like Guarddog that I could use to setup a firewall.
Well I've installed and played with PC-BSD for a couple of hours now and I think it's very good.
The install went without any trouble, all hardware was detected and works fine. The package installer is brilliant. I've got limited knowledge of Linux and have spent many hours scratching my head whilst studying the output spewing from the terminal after another failed compile/install
With that in mind can anyone point me to an easy way to set up a basic firewall for my stand alone system. I found this topic, http://www.pcbsd.org/forums/viewtopic.p ... 941135100c (http://www.pcbsd.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=538&highlight=firewall&sid=e08eae0a361de5c105653f941135100c)
but I haven't got time to spend reading pages and pages of instructions (I probaly wouldn't understand them anyway  ).
Thanks

The BSD packetfilter firewall was easy to set up and make rulesets for. The tutorial scottro has for it is only one page long and easy to understand:

Weixiong, comments like that make it worthwhile spending the time to make those pages. Thank you very much.
(Actually, the Peter of Peter's firewall page linked at the bottom also complemented it, so I was walking on air.)
The thing is, I write those pages for people new to these things and it's always great to hear that it helped someone.
Thanks, I'll give that a try at the weekend if I get chance :) .

Hi. I got some slight doubts after reading the previous posts - what is the default firewall for PC-BSD - pf or ipfw2 (as it is in fbsd 5.x)?
If you choosed pf just as an example for describing the BSD firewalling basics (maybe because you have been using pf for a long time but never ipfw) - may i post a few interesting ipfw2 configs for these people who prefer ipfw2 somewhere at this forum or create a little FAQ for ipfw fans to keep symmetry?
Thank you for patience.
