I've started working on a submarine sim. There seems to be a lack of modern subsims in the open source world. Dangers of the Deep was good, but they focused on a first person WWII style and I'm more interested in modern subs with a third-person perspective. At any rate what I've got is in the very early stages, but I'd like to get feedback. The first tarball just hit the server today over at http://openssn.sf.net

If feedback is positive, I'll work on making the game more flexible so it can be added to the Ports tree.

Hello,

I just tried to see if it was working. I had no problem compiling it on FreeBSD, it launched correctly. I'll just need to read the manual before play because I didn't understand anything ! :D

Admittedly the interface needs some cleaning up to make it easier to understand. There is a list of keyboard short-cuts in the README file.

I saw the README file. I tried to play a bit more, the game seems a good start but I'd like to rise the followings :

- I don't understand anything on the interface (what's going on ? I see some graphs and numbers)

Maybe a little manual would be great. I just seen that there are others screens in the interface, but I don't understand them too.

- What's the goal of the game ?

Do you have to "pilot" the submarine and avoid things in the deep ocean or destroy some objectives ? :)

I'm aware that the game is in its beginning, but I think priority is to let the player what he is doing, and what's happening.

If you launch the game and you don't understand what's happening, you'll just click everywhere to see if it changes something, then close the game and delete it :D.

Thanks for the feedback. I've just pushed out a minor update to the download server (http://openssn.sf.net). As per your advice I included the beginnings of a manual. Everything is still quite rough, but I think this is a step in the right direction.

In the next version I hope to add some objectives and a more complete manual.

Quick update: I've just put out a new release, which features two missions, improved AI and some nicer sonar. And *drumroll* OpenSSN has been accepted into FreeBSD's Port Collection. So far as I know, that makes FreeBSD the first operating system to include OpenSSN (w00t) and I'm hoping to get a PBI put together for PC-BSD in the near future.

Cool !

I'm sorry that I didn't give you any feedback since long time. I just forgot to come here since a while !
