I just installed pcbsd9(alpha snapsot) on virtualbox and, despite telling the install wizard not to,it installed gnome anyway.when it boots up it will start in gnome. However the desktop wont load(it will keep showing the "loading" cursor).I was able to access some apps(pcbsd control panel, dolphin, konsole etc)But the keyboard doesnt seem to work.

I tried runing in singleuser mode to change the file /etc/ttys so as to stop automaticaly starting x,but I couldnt find any editor to do so.I used csh and tried nano,vi,vim, emacs but they were absent.

Any suggestions?

I'm surprised to see vi or vim aren't available, but PCBSD seems to come with ee too. So try ee.

But it looks like the install fell over in many ways when you deselected gnome?

This is a problem with pcbsd9 alpha. It is not ready for common usage so if you don't know how to debug please don't use it. Thread closed. Merged with http://forums.pcbsd.org/showthread.php?t=13933

Alpha means VERY buggy / not feature complete :)

If you want to try an updated version, the newer alpha/snapshot is
available here:

ftp://ftp.pcbsd.org/pub/snapshots/9-CURRENT-20110113/

We'll be sending an announcement over to the mailing lists shortly with
some info about this snapshot.
