View Full Version : Banshee
Banshee is an open-source media player, originally called Sonance until 2005. Built upon Mono and Gtk#, it uses the Helix and GStreamer multimedia platform for encoding and decoding various media formats, including Ogg Vorbis, MP3 and FLAC. Banshee can play and import audio CDs and supports many portable media players, including Apple's iPod, Android devices and Creative's ZEN players.

I'm taking care of this. Just finished building a PBI for this and testing it now.

Ok now I'm stuck... cannot find the proper executable to launch Banshee; need to take some time to look into it
Last time I checked it was banshee-, how is things going with it?

I've not been able to get Banshee to work properly here either, its a
Mono-based app, and so far I've never seen any mono app run properly on
BSD, even if just installing via ports.
Running Banshee on my PCBSD ... it's running like a charm

Is that the port you installed? I may need to take another look at it,
about a year ago I couldn't get it to work at all :)
Yes running from ports /usr/ports/multimedia/banshee :D
... works like a charm with the GNOME PBI ;)

So what is the proper executable (and path) to launch Banshee in your case?
/usr/local/bin/banshee-1
Is this what you need ?

It's been a while since this thread was updated. I have put together a PBI module for Banshee and submitted it for testing.

The Banshee PBI (version 1.6.1) is now available.

I have Banshee 1.6.1 working on my Android while running PCBSD 8.2 . Here's what I did, with credit to David Kerr (http://www.davidmkerr.com/misc/syncing-droid-x-with-banshee/).
After mounting the DroidX in USB Mass Storage mode, I had to create a file called .is_audio_player and make a slightly modified file from David Kerr's website:
name=Droid
audio_folders=/media/disk/Music/
folder_depth=2
output_formats=audio/mpeg,audio/mp3,audio/x-aac
playlist_format=audio/x-mpegurl
cover_art_file_type=jpg
and with a save, Banshee was up....
Troubleshooting steps
Now, for anyone having trouble getting PCBSD to see the Android device, I had to change my setting, on the Android device, from USB Mass Storage to PC Mode to USB Mass Storage while the USB cable was plugged into my machine. This happened to me a few times, but not always...

I tested the PBI (from pbibuild) and audio playback simply doesn't work (perhaps it's not compatible with OSS?). Furthermore, clicking on the "now playing" button causes Banshee to crash.

The PBI's for Banshee do not work with PC-BSD 9.x
The PBI that was released a couple years ago was for 8.x, but the 9.x PBI's have not been approved due to the segmentation faults/crashes that you noticed.
