Complete newbie here. Just installed pcbsd7 on a brand new cheap Compaq laptop...model CQ40.
I need a hint as to how to make an internet connection. I'm a bit familiar with KDE3.. but KDE4 seems not as intuitive. Cannot find a utility to configure an internet connection. I'm using pppOe, and it's working fine on my desktop with pclos.
Why I mentioned KDE4, is because I before trying pcbsd I installed Open Suse using KDE4, and could not find a utility to configure a connection there either.

PCBSD provides this via the network manager (KDE only appears to have a utility for dial-up).
In the system tray (bottom right normally) there's the the network applet. Right click, and select "Start the Network Manager".
In the network manager, click on the "Network Configuration (Advanced)" tab. There'll be a section titled "PPPoE Configuration" which will be mostly grey-out. Click on the "Change Configuration" button. Youl'll be asked for the admin (root) password, then a new dialog will appear.
In the System Network Config dialog, there's an tickbox for "Enable PPPoE on this system". Tick this, and enter your ISP username password, etc. For DNS, gateway, etc, check with your ISP ( you may be able to leave this blank if using DHCP).
Click "Save", then "Ok" on the original Network manager dialog.

Hi Pheet, there is no network applet in the network tray . There are four applets: Korganizer Reminder Daemon/Kmix sound/System updater/and Trashcan.
Did find 'system network configuration" in "system settings"... and opened "network configuration (advanced). But cannot enter data due to problem with mouse icon (see other post : viewtopic.php?f=1&t=13760 (http://forums.pcbsd.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=13760) ) i.e. the cursor keeps morphing into a 3/4 inch square of multi-coloured lines. So when click on boxes cannot enter data.
Tried other mouse, and other usb ports but no joy. Also disconnected mouse and had same problem with touchpad.
Assuming there's a fix for this, there's still some doubt in my mind as to a few of the entries. DNS1 and DNS2 I know, as well as Gateway. But other OS's I've used refer to "netmask" and "IP address". Do these correspond to "hostname" and IPv6 gateway"? If so which to which?
I guess I'm stymied until I can get the mouse working. Hope there's a fix.

Established linux user doing my first BSD install: PC_BSD 7.2. KDE 4.2.4. This is happening to me also. I know its nothing to do with internet configuration, so I'll keep myself to a minimum. Bazzaman, did you get a solution to this?
