This ain't really a tip but more of a Suggestion on any slightly old PC-hardware:

I gave fluxbox(WM) a spin,(just pick no "auto-login") and after installing the fluxconf port, I had all my favourite KDE apps, k3b,opera,mplayer,k9copy, ..., and WOOOWWWW ! flux is soooooooooooooooo much faster(as a WM) than KDE 4.
It(flux) still needs a bit 'o fine-tuning to really make it nice but the speed difference was quite substantial for me on my (old)P3-Compaq Laptop (256Meg), and even more so on my slightly newer P4 Thinkpad T40.
KDE4 is unfortunately a giant "BLOATBOX" compared to Flux, but yes we all pay for ease and automation, ...

anyway, like I said if you got older hardware but you still want useablity with most of your good (X-hungary)apps -then yes, use FLUXBOX.

now to figure SLIT out

The *box family is infinatly lighter and faster then KDE4 :-)

I personally use Blackbox, most here usually Fluxbox or Openbox when it comes to the *boxes. FVWM and TWM are also good for speed (stuff like wmii, dwm, awesome, and the like are also speedy)

Do it like a real Hacker:
Try to help yourself with typing "man fluxbox" in konsole. 8)

More Info:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fluxbox
http://www.linux.org/lessons/short/fluxbox/index.html
http://www.fluxbox.org/help/

Now you should be able to edit the "menu" file in your Homedirectory ~/.fluxbox/menu
There is a way to create or change this file with help of a script.
Here "http://fluxbox.sourceforge.net/docbook/en/html/sect-fbgm.html"
you should have found more info, but it says "fluxbox-generate_menu
FIXME: This section has to be written."

So just try this: "fluxbox-generate_menu" in konsole.

After that, checkout if you are missing anything in your menu. If so, open the "menu" file and edit it.

Give Xfce a spin. It is still in development, but so far it works great on Debian and other *NIX systems. Xfce is one of the lightest or least resources WM that I have used. Flux has always been a lightweight, wich is good, KDE is getting to be more of an independent program than a WM. It is still nice, and can be configured as lightweight or heavy as one prefers, that is the beauty of Free Open Source software.
I reverted to 7.1.2 because this old box is just that, old. The Hubble or 8 was just a memory and resource animal with the KDE 4 upgrade.
I will go back to 8 when the PBI for Xfce,Fluxbox and others are stable.
Am also looking at Java or Qt pure program language stuff to get a grasp on the netbook and older Laptops. These things need minimal resources to operate ate any stable or suitable way.
As soon as I re-learn or re-educate myself in this system, then I would like to launch an Xfce PBI.
