1/ it will only work if the system can do it via ACPI -- works for some systems but YMMV, you might check for BIOS updates and see if that helps.
2/ I know there is a FreeBSD driver for a certain marvell yukon ethernet NIC but I'm not aware of there laptop sets, what kind of yukon chipset does your laptop use? Maybe someone might know where to find it.
3/ Intel 3945 wireless, see this thread (http://forums.pcbsd.org/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=9763&hilit=intel+3945)
* FreeBSD can shutdown all of my systems, the one running OpenBSD however needs me to push the power button afterwards :\

well i,ve checked the bios and there is no bios update and i've see the thread too about 3945 intel pro, i've tried to install it too. one thing i can not understand is where is the part of line that should i change according to the readme.
it's marvell yukon 88E8038. i've download the drive file right from marvell.com, it's .tgz file and i don't see any readme on the tgz file what should i do ?
oh yes and i've tried to use ndisgen i want to know where is the file that ndisgen hav ebeen generated? i've searched it everywhere and i couldn't find it.
sorry for my bad english, hope you understand what i mean
oh, thanks for the reply, i just open it.

According to the FreeBSD manual that chipset /should/ be supported by the msk(4) (http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=msk&apropos=0&sektion=0&manpath=FreeBSD+6.3-RELEASE&format=html) driver.
If you open the k-menu and go to the run menu, type in the box:
kdesu konqueror
press enter and use the root password on the popup dialog that appears. That should launch Konqueror in super user mode (in restricted access to the system).
navigate to the /boot folder and open the file loader.conf
add this line to the bottom of the file:
if_msk_load="YES"
save the file, close konqueror, and give a reboot and *in theory* the network card should be detected.
Afraid I can't be much help with the Intel Wireless or NDISGEN, because I've never actually gotten my laptops broadcom card to work with it, my solution was buying a supported Netgear PCMCIA card hehe.

the list of drivers for that network card (hhttp://www.marvell.com/drivers/driverSearchResults.do) only shows a driver for FreeBSD 7, which shouldn't work with PC-BSD 1.5 as it is based on FreeBSD 6.3.
They also seem to have a general driver (http://www.marvell.com/drivers/driverDisplay.do?driverId=139) for FreeBSD 6.0.
I haven't downloaded the files since I don't have the device, so I don't know if they are even designed with any compatibility in mind other then the 6.0/7.0 releases.
You may wish to try the msk driver provided by FreeBSD for your release -- which according to the manual is based on Marvell's driver and the sk(4) driver.

Well, i,ve tried to load the msk driver like you suggest me and the result is like the dmesg message up there. oh yes the driver that i put it in and it result the dmesg message is the general driver you have talking about. well should i quit trying ?
oh, well i'll try it once again. from the beginning. wish me luck !
Oh, by the way I get surprise when I tried to install pc bsd on my pc at home. It works very good :D . But only one problem that when I activated compiz fusion, my computer did not mount my flash disk anymore :( . What is the problem ? :?: Here is my pc stats :
motherboard : asus p4b533
vga : nvidia 400 mx
memory : 256 mb
a lot of thanks for your concern once again !

With that kind of card and ram, I'm surprised the system can take compiz :\
I've two machines, one good enough to handle Compiz but no time to break things with it ;-)

well,
i've tried from the beginning and when i install marvel 88e8038 with mykbsd60-8.14.9.3.tgz. like this:
tar -xfv mykbsd60-8.14.9.3
cp myk.ko /boot/kernel
kldload myk.ko
vi /boot/loader.conf
i add --> if_myk.ko_load="YES"
i got dmesg just like i sent few days ago.
and i got very brilliant idea and messing around with the kernel, i compile the kernel well but that's another failure.
than i install pcbsd 1.5 again from the beginning and i tried to load msk.ko like you suggest and i do the procedure like above and it's a failure again.
well can you tell me something about it ? :?:
oh yes, about intel pro 3945 abg onlu available for freebsd 7.0. no wonder i tried to install it and ended with failure again.

well, it's not your fault, besides, my pc at home worls fine with pcbsd 1.5  . so i guess i use freebsd 7 for my laptops. wish me luck.
oh btw is there any freebsd forum like pcbsd ?
TerryP
06-16-2008, 05:12 AM
Good luck
As far as forums, you might like to check out daemonforums.org
BSDForums is now defunct but useful for searching, most people moved to daemonforums ;-)

Well, it's me again.....
i've tried to install freebsd 7.0, my question is :
1. when my laptop shutdown it's not shut down completely with the power, just the same with pcbsd, is there something i should know about ? :?:
2. i just want to ask how can i set freebsd into full desktop usability os like pcbsd ?
oh yes, i almost forgot how to use mailinglist in freebsd.org?
thanks
TerryP
06-24-2008, 05:43 AM
Hmm, I could've sworn I saw a similiar post on daemonforums >_>
Using a mailing list on FreeBSD is the same as anyother OS -> through a mail user agent.
shutdown without having to push the power button is done via ACPI, which is purely a case of YMMV much like the quality of ACPI implementations at times...
"full desktop usability os" has different meanings to different people. Your starting point would probably be to open an xterm and install kde
su - root
Password:
pkg_add -r kde && rehash && xmessage -center "kde is installed"
The FreeBSD handbook gives detailed instructions on setting up KDE, Gnome, etc and X.

i've tried to install freebsd 7.0, my question is :
1. when my laptop shutdown it's not shut down completely with the power, just the same with pcbsd, is there something i should know about ? :?:
2. i just want to ask how can i set freebsd into full desktop usability os like pcbsd ?
oh yes, i almost forgot how to use mailinglist in freebsd.org?
thanks
You could always give the PC-BSD Alpha 7 a try. It actually is very stable. And it is based on FreeBSD V7.

The developers post on the testing mailing list whenever there is a new build available, I'm not sure if they have nightly snapshots still running or not.
For something lighter then KDE, it is really easier to use PC-BSD with KDE until you are able to 'live without it', since the PC-BSD'ims become less reliable without a full kde session.
Under regular FreeBSD (and PC-BSD, when used accordingly) it doesn't matter what you have installed.
I'd suggest Xfce4, lite, integrated, and popular desktop environment.
fvwm, can be rather minimal until ones read a few thousand lines of documentation and written a configuration file lol.

the best way to locate software in the ports tree is IMHO with the psearch program (as root: pkg_add -r psearch). The freebsd website and 'search' make targets in /usr/ports are also helpful.
*Broken* ports should be reported to the maintainer after testing with a current sup of the ports tree, you should find the maintainers e-mail listed in the pkg-descr and Makefile files in the ports directory.
gtk+ is also known as gtk 2.x because of the age old compat issue between gtk 1.x / gtk 2.x libraries they are in ports as x11-toolkits/gtk12 and x11-toolkits/gtk20 for GTK 1.2.x and GTK+ 2.x.x respectively.
I believe the math/pspp port was updated to 0.6.0 about 4 or 5 days ago.

hi guys !
it's me again. no... no... iwill not complain about things and that anymore cause it have solved. :)
1. the msk problem : i met the msk maker and he say to disable the acpi and it works so he say again that i can use pcbsd 1.5 with acpi disabled and he told me the way to do it. :D
2. the fvwm : my friend told me to try fvwm crystal and i try fvwm crystal, it seem unstable when the system is busy (more like gnome), so i try fluxbox and as far as now i satisfied with it. :D
the fvwm itself is good clean and stable but when my mother see it she said "yuckk!! was your computer broke down again?" :D
3. when i try pcbsd 7 it seems that the problem occur so i disabled the acpi and walah! :o it's worked !
so it seems that the acpi problem in freebsd and pcbsd had'nt solved yet. but it's okay at least i can use my laptop with pclinuxos and slackware after i several time wiped out slackware installation (because it seems slackware share the same acpi problem with freebsd).
4. oh yes does anyone knows why slackware forum in indonesia or the international one is like a ghost town ? where is the forum of slackware ?
hey the last word....
thanks for listening my whinning annoying question and everything !
greet,

My mother says the same thing, when my monitor is in "console" mode hehe.
As to Slackware forums, I only drop in on LinuxQuestions.
